Can you explain what’s written on those boards?
What message are these boards trying to convey?
The placement and format of these boards suggest that it is put by a real estate agent. And, it is related to we don’t know what because we don’t under that language.
You can know what’s written on it only if you know the Chinese languages. And, in Canada, there aren’t many people who can understand the Chinese languages.
So, what’s the point of putting a board for public written in a language that most of the people don’t understand?
Is it on purpose so that only a small portion of the public can understand and respond? These pictures aren’t targeting the majority of the people for sure. These are two pictures with such boards in Richmond Hill, Canada, but there are plenty of them in Richmond Hill, Brampton and other regions across Canada.
We understand and respect Canada being a democratic country. And, we respect every language, but if we have to convey a message for the public, we convey it by using the language that is widely spoken among the people.
If we do want to target foreign audience, who don’t speak local language then we must have bilingual boards because the primary language is English here.
Canada is a multi-cultural community. Even if we want to target people from other countries who under foreign language, then by putting the board in only one foreign language is also disrespectful to other communities and languages.
RECO guidelines and REBBA 2002 Act also has a section about advertising.
“No registrant shall make false, misleading or deceptive statements in any advertisement, circular, pamphlet or material published by any means relating to trading in real estate.”
Foreign Language boards can be misleading
As Real Estate Professionals, it is our duty to cater the needs of every citizen equally. By putting language specific boards, we are only catering a small portion of one community.
